Justice  12/25-00 IMC post  TURKEY: UPDATE ON PRISON SITUATION

27 Dead, Fasts Continue, Turkish security forces stormed 20 prisons on 19 December at about 4.30am, to end hunger strikes by political prisoners. At least 27 prisoners have died in the course of the assalt, which is still under way in two of the prisons. More than 1,200 political prisoners have been on hunger strike since 20 October, in protest at plans to move them to new prisons where they will be housed in small cells, rather than dormitories that hold up to 60 prisoners. They think that they will be locked up alone or in small groups in these new prisons, and therefore isolated and at greater risk of assault or torture. Some 200 of the hunger strikers were on *death fast* (taking water, but no sugar), and many of them were reportedly close to death at the time of the raids.
Media  12/24-00 IMC post  LOCK-OUT WBAI   In a dramatic escalation of the struggle between WBAI supporters and the Pacifica Foundation, in what some are calling a coup, Utrice Leid was declared interim station manager and last night changed all the locks at the station. Leid is replacing Valerie Van Isler, who was recently canned by Pacifica when she finally began to stand up against their increasing corporatization of the community supported radio station.  Also fired was Program Director and long-time morning show host Bernard White. 100's of listeners protested this coup. The protesters have added elections to their list of demands.

Protest  12/11-00 IMC post  Protests Intensify Outside Summit    Police and protesters have clashed outside the venue of the latest European Union summit in Nice as EU leaders gathered to hammer out the future of the block. A Banque Nationale de Paris office has been set alight - a street away from where European leaders were meeting for three days of talks that are expected to lead to major reforms and pave the way for expanding the European Union. When fire services arrived to put out the blaze in the French city they were pelted with rocks, but were able to retreat when police bombarded activists with tear gas and concussion grenades. Twenty police officers were injured and seven protesters arrested in the clashes.

Riot Cops Beat Human Rights Activists  The crackdown began hours after King Mohammed VI gave a televised address to coincide with UN Human Rights Day, in which he promised to build a constitutional and democratic monarchy. Batons were used to disperse hundreds of protestors from a banned Islamic group who had gathered outside parliament to mark United Nations Human Rights Day. A BBC correspondent in Rabat is reporting that dozens of protestors were beaten before being herded into buses where they were beaten again. Hundreds of arrests have been reported. This follows on the heels of violence used agaist people demonstrating for democracy on Saturday.

Quite possibly, a decision could be made over the Thanksgiving holiday. Supporters are asking for a massive response to the FBI and police's attempts to sway Clinton away from clemency. Internet  11/17-00 IMC post  FBI the INTERNET & YOU  Carnivore More Powerful Than Claimed  The FBI released additional documents about its controversial Carnivore technology Thursday, and critics immediately lambasted it as proof that the email-tapping program is more powerful and invasive than the government has disclosed. The Electronic Privacy Information Center, which sued the FBI for the information through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), said the batch of paperwork indicates that Carnivore can capture and archive "unfiltered" Internet traffic--contrary to FBI assertions. Critics have been arguing that Carnivore is just one more part of a cyber world that is increasingly watched.  read more

11/16-00 IMC post  Dam Actions In INDIA  Indian Activists Storm IMF Over a thousand environmental protesters today stormed police barricades in New Delhi, and marched up to the offices of the World Bank, demanding they be allowed to meet with visiting Bank president James Wolfensohn. The Supreme Court handed down a ruling on October 18 rejecting a six year old court appeal against the Rs 370 billion Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat, western India. Proponents of the dam say it will produce much needed electricity and flood control. Critics point to the hundreds of thousands of people who will be displaced by the rising water and have nowhere to go as well as disrupting food production. There has been an international campaign against the dam projects. Walking nearly nine kilometers in New Delhi to the World Bank's offices, protestors shouted slogans against the global project lender and demanded that it "quit India." read more

11/08-00  Election Opinion  Is this any way to elect a president?   The Electoral College needs the outcome of all the states to determine the presidency. The popular vote for the State of Florida must be reconciled before these electoral delegates can vote. Can our great nation elect the next president using a possibly flawed mechanical system of voting? I have spoken with a source in Palm Beach County and claims that a large number of voters had complaints about the ballot are true. Many voters in Florida found themselves facing a ballot that was awkward at best. The problem revolved around poor design that had some people leaving the voting booth unsure for whom they had voted. It is quite possible that a few thousand votes could alter the outcome of this election. Without laying blame, I believe this situation needs to be resolved, if not the election will stand historically as another signpost, along the road of decline in the value of the rights of all Americans. Will the powers to be, be able to remedy this obviously delicate situation? A challenge to this vote may be necessary, unless the Florida State officials have a fair solution. One possibility is that the voters in Palm Beach County recast their votes. America could also consider formatting a national ballot, one that would be the same in all states, alleviating the possibility of future faulty ballots.   Whatever the outcome, rest assured that our political system is being looked at by the world. The engine of Democracy's future is at stake, let us not lose sight of that. Nations expected to follow in our pathway, need to see that freedom & justice for all means just that in America.

Political  11/08-00  Election Update  National Election To Close To Call  Gore rescinds concession call to George Bush early this morning, as Florida officials claim their election has a margin less than 1000 votes between the two presidential candidates. Several Florida counties have not reported their full absentee ballots & finally there are still oversees ballots which can arrive up to 10 days from Election Day. An electoral race this close in most states would require a recount. Florida will recount the vote. The Electoral College, which elects the president, will need the outcome of Florida to determine the presidency.

Protest  11/06-00 IMC post   Austrian anti-nuclear activists sealed off the border with the Czech Republic Sunday, the fourth day of renewed blockades aimed at forcing the Czech government to shut down a recently activated nuclear power plant. International opinion is increasingly negative toward the new plant which is now online. There are reports of news crews being denied access to the demonstrators. Dialog between Austria and the Czech Republic is increasingly under strain due to the protests. The current blockade started Thursday at three border crossings closest to the nuclear plant in Temelin, 30 miles from the border with Austria. The blockade was gradually extended over the next three days and the last of the 15 crossing points was closed for traffic at noon Sunday

Environment  11/04-00 IMC post  Oxy Begins Test Drilling  On Friday, just outside of U'wa land, Occidental Petroleum began test drilling. Leaders of the U'wa Indian tribe have protested the Occidental Petroleum Corp. project for years, at one point even threatening a mass suicide should the company be allowed to drill in the area near Colombia's eastern border with Venezuela. An international campaign against Occidental and its main financier, Fidelity has been continually targeting Al Gore (who is invested in Oxy, as well as Ralph Nader) to speak out on behalf of the U'wa.

Conflict  11/1-00 IMC post-Israel   The Bombing of Beit Jala  Dear Friends, I felt that there is no use in telling anybody what is happening here tonight because I lost hope in anybody being able to do anything, and because there is nothing fair on this earth. I am so angry and so frustrated at everything and everybody! Since 4:30 pm, we have been under heavy shelling by Israeli tanks and helicopters. The shelling was targeting all houses and residential areas in Beit Jala.  expanded articles

anti-war protests continue as 100,000 demonstrators led by stop the war coalition joined the Troops Out - No Trident demonstration on 24 February in central London calling for all occupying troops to be withdrawn from Iraq, no replacement of Britain’s nuclear weapons system and no attack on Iran. TO STOP THE WAR: "George Bush's plan to deploy more troops to Iraq is as immoral & criminal as the initial invasion and occupation. The majority of American people are held hostage by an administration which not only does not represent, but arrogantly denies, the will of the people. I fully support any work being done to end the war and bring our troops home." Actress Jessica Lange ... LINDSEY GERMAN [Stop the War] told the marchers: "We are fed up with a government that is addicted to war, that is spreading from Afghanistan to Iraq, Somalia to Lebanon. Now they want to attack Iran. If they do we will be on the streets in even greater numbers. We will demonstrate and take action until all these wars are at an end."

1/02 WEM/blog thoughts for a new year ... whether political despair, financial upset or the realization that the "American Dream' may be broken ... folks, we have struggled this last year & now look forward to a fresh start ... the future needs mending in so many ways from the viewpoint of the left  ... optimism, even in this darkness created by the need to use muscle, flexing no longer satisfying, the need for more reaction while feeding the industrial military machine ... leading to an inadvisable direction for the US which has no standing either at the UN amidst world consensus or even at home, hardly supported by the citizens of this country ... who is this government representing in this conflict, & who ultimately should be held responsible for the actions of a country ... citizens who create a system and then confirm such with an elective government ... which has no respect for its myriad powers to effect our collective resources ... let's just say that this chapter may be ending but the final outcome still hangs in the air

12/06 WEM/blog once in a while a new idea comes forth, today one came about in a truly bold step by the bi-partisan committee giving a report to the American People that starts with the premise that we have ventured on a course not well thought out, that needs remedy, and also suggests that a healing of the divide present in the country also be part of the equation. The past election & now this report, suggest that America may in fact be working; as the country moves towards a direction of political reconciliation, leading to a correction of the mistake which we now call the 'war on terrorism' in Iraq.

11/06 WEM/blog Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, a top religious leader, and the radical nationalist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr begin to take leadership roles, as we foresee a civil war breaking out in central Iraq. The current government & the US have also fallen on their respective swords, leaving us to wonder who will ultimately prevail in the future of this most fragile country. The Kurd's autonomous region to the north represents a glimpse of the region; as the sectarians who ruled in the distant past may come forward to provide a pathway to the future. "Civil war could lead to the break-up of the country, and would export even more instability and violence across the wider Middle East and beyond." BBC reports A civil war in Iraq would destroy the chances of the elected central government, which will be led and dominated by Shias when eventually it is formed  BBC NEWS Middle East Iraq's civil war nightmare

9/06 WEM/blog HH the Dalai Lama came to Woodstock & then he was gone - a brief visit to give a public talk and then a teaching at at KTD, a Tibetan Monastery high on Overlook Mountain before heading to NYC for teachings in that realm - there was no advertising of the special day and the crowd was local and quite excited to have such a notable figure just stop by to say hello. The talk centered on family & the raising of children in safe secure environments in contrast to impoverished societies - HH also discussed the nature of ones outlook on life & how it influences the direction one follows - we hope HH will grace us again sometime in the future

9/06 WEM/blog an unexpected turn of events reveal that HH Dalai Lama will honor Woodstock with his presence for an afternoon talk on 'PEACE' this coming week this is an unscheduled stop as HH travels from a local retreat [Menla] to KTD Monastery atop overlook mountain, for a teaching on the following day .... will offer an opportunity for local activists to hear one who practices non-violence offer guidance amidst current events that suggest that violence is a viable solution to many of the problems that our world confronts .... one can only hope that the words spoken here will somehow find a  way to the ears of the leaders who desperately need to hear them

9/06 WEM/blog an anticipated turn of events on Thursday led United for Peace and Justice, the nation's largest antiwar coalition, to learn it would be given a permit for a peaceful antiwar protest march in New York City to coincide with President Bush’s visit to the United Nations. UFPJ characterizes it as a stunning turn of events, as the NYC Police Department reversed its previous decision to deny UFPJ the right to march on Sept. 19th within proximity of the U.N.

9/06 the New York City Police Department has refused to grant a permit to United for Peace & Justice to march anywhere near the United Nations - we are marching anyway permit or no permit - we will stand up against this immoral war and for our right to dissent. We need your support! "  http://www.unitedforpeace.org/

9/06 during a meeting to discuss the details of a protest against President Bush when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly on Sept. 19th, the NYC Police Department stunned the representatives of United for Peace & Justice when they said there would be NO marches allowed anywhere near the UN that day. NYPD Says No to Plans for Antiwar March When Bush Speaks at U.N. On August 29th UFPJ hand-delivered a permit request to march on a route that would go from Herald Square at 6th Ave. and 34th Street to the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, a park across the street from the U.N. Instead of working out details, the police announced that "security concerns" related to the president and other heads of state being in New York City would be their primary responsibility on Sept. 19th, and therefore they would not be allowing any marches in the general vicinity of the U.N. One suggested response to the police decision is to organize a non-violent civil disobedience action, by marching without a permit, possibly from a legally permitted rally site to the U.N. United for Peace & Justice plans to announce response at a press conference on Thursday.

summer '06 destroying the Lebanese landscape & tearing at the heart of humanity .. it's all about territory & control, power without regard for human life, merely the cost of reaching distant goals meant to serve a population while not serving that population at all .. war is obscene, killing children is never acceptable, engaging terror with force begets conflict so mired in confusion, that the unraveling itself hinders the objective .. peace movements whose voices are never heard .. UN inaction, a pathway set forth in sub Saharan Africa ..  conflict based on history distorted by time, and the retelling of tales of false truths .. wandering the sands of the middle east, one can find the bullets & blood of so many innocents .. militias are told they must disarm, while those shouting those commands back home point to a constitution which guarantees the right to bear arms & self protection, hypocrites all, while flipping burgers at barbecues & mowing the grass with little regard for the energy used for these simple tasks, why are we not realizing that people are suffering & dying for this, our way of life, America wake up, we cannot continue to live for the sake of a war machine motivated by greed, so the few may profit in unholy ways .. which in the end allows the death of children to be just numbers in the name of holy war July 8, 1958 Lebanon War Picture

fly over North Korea & then to the south, seeing all those lights appear makes some wish all the world was awash in energy & consuming all it could get .. however this makes me wonder why we must follow this environmentally unwise pathway to the future .. surely there must be room for indigenous, tribal, alternative ways of life .. must we all become good consumers for the profit of the profiteers

Due to a United States plan to realign its military bases in Asia, the Daechuri villagers, along with other farming communities near Pyeongtaek, in South Korea, are being forcibly evicted from their land. After a long struggle against the Korean government's attempts to take their homes, the villagers declared  Daechuri autonomous & renounced their Korean citizenship in early February. Foreign bases in Pyeongtaek first arrived during the Sino-Japan War.  From War broke out between the two countries, and Japan emerged in a great victory. One can only imagine how hard both sides fought. Even today, through oral history, people  describe the fighting as if the “city of Asan & Pyeongtaek were ready collapse.” From 1904-05, Japan waged a war with Russia in the (Russo-Japanese War). Again, however, this war was fought not on Japanese or Russian soil, but in Korea. Pyeongtaek again
became an outpost for foreign military bases. US in South Korea As soon as Korea became liberated, the Japanese base in Anjungri was taken over by the US military. As US military units began expanding, nearby residents were employed as “house boys” by the US military or in construction projects. Children aged 15-16 were also ordered by US servicemen to clean or run errands. Because the US military used bulldozers to construct bases, in a short span of time, hills and farm fields were converted into military facilities. The US obviously expanded bases during the Korean War. But even after the war, the bases continued to expand. Now even as the US troop deployment is being reduced the farmers of South Korea continue to pay a price for US presence in the conflict with DPRK. On the peninsular one thing is for certain, money & power continue to hold the reins of control over peoples lives & lands.

Stop the Shell Pipeline Protests have taken place in Ireland, England, Scotland & Sweden to publicise the campaign ahead of the re-opening of Rossport Solidarity Camp, a protest camp supporting a community based struggle against Shell in the West of Ireland. On Friday 17th there was a demonstration in Liverpool, a critical mass style bike ride and occupation of Shell garages  in Nottingham and in north London. In Rossport Irish residents & supporters continue to obstruct the building of a dangerous gas pipeline. Last year five men from Rossport were jailed for contempt of court for refusing to obey the High Court order not to interfere with the construction of the Corrib gas pipeline. They were expected to be back at the High Court, potentially facing more time in jail.
