demonstration on 24 February in central London calling for all occupying
troops to be withdrawn from Iraq, no replacement of Britain’s nuclear
weapons system and no attack on Iran.
TO STOP THE WAR:
"George Bush's plan to deploy more troops to Iraq is as immoral &
criminal as the initial invasion and occupation. The majority of American
people are held hostage by an administration which not only does not
represent, but arrogantly denies, the will of the people. I fully support
any work being done to end the war and bring our troops home." Actress
Jessica Lange ... LINDSEY
GERMAN [Stop the War] told the marchers: "We are fed up
with a government that is addicted to war, that is spreading from
Afghanistan to Iraq, Somalia to Lebanon. Now they want to attack Iran. If
they do we will be on the streets in even greater numbers. We will
demonstrate and take action until all these wars are at an end."

1/02 WEM/blog thoughts for a
new year ... whether political despair, financial upset
or the realization that the "American Dream' may be broken ... folks,
we have struggled this last year & now look forward to a
fresh start ... the future needs
mending in so
many ways from the viewpoint of the left ... optimism, even in this darkness created by
the need to use muscle, flexing no longer satisfying, the need for more
reaction while feeding the industrial military machine ... leading to an inadvisable
direction for the US which has no standing either at the UN amidst world
consensus or even at home, hardly supported by the citizens of this
country ... who is
this government representing in this conflict, & who ultimately should be
held responsible for the actions of a country ... citizens who create
a system and then confirm such with an elective government ... which has no
respect for its myriad powers to
effect our collective resources ... let's just say that this chapter may be ending but the final
outcome still hangs in the air
12/06 WEM/blog once in a while a new idea
comes forth, today one came about in a truly bold step by the bi-partisan
committee giving a report to the American People that starts with the
premise that we have ventured on a course not well thought out, that needs
remedy, and also suggests that a healing of the divide present in the
country also be part of the equation. The past election & now this
report, suggest that America may in fact be working; as the
country moves towards a direction of political reconciliation, leading to
a correction of the mistake which we now call the 'war on terrorism' in
Iraq.

Shia Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, a top religious
leader, and the radical nationalist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr begin to take leadership
roles, as we foresee a civil war breaking out in central Iraq. The current
government & the US have also fallen on their respective swords,
leaving us to wonder who will ultimately prevail in the future of this
most fragile country. The Kurd's autonomous region to the north represents
a glimpse of the region; as the sectarians who ruled in the distant past may come forward
to provide a pathway to the future. "Civil war could lead to the
break-up of the country, and would export even more instability and
violence across the wider Middle East and beyond." BBC reports
A civil war in Iraq
would destroy the chances of the elected central government, which will be
led and dominated by Shias when eventually it is formed

9/06 WEM/blog HH the Dalai Lama came to Woodstock & then he was gone - a brief visit
to give a public talk and then a teaching at at KTD, a Tibetan
Monastery high on Overlook Mountain before heading to NYC for teachings in
that realm - there was no advertising of the special day and the crowd was
local and quite excited to have such a notable figure just stop by to say
hello. The talk centered on family & the raising of children in safe
secure environments in contrast to impoverished societies - HH also
discussed the nature of ones outlook on life & how it influences the
direction one follows - we hope HH will grace us again sometime in the
future
9/06 WEM/blog an unexpected turn of events reveal that HH Dalai
Lama will honor Woodstock with his presence for an afternoon talk on 'PEACE' this
coming week this is an unscheduled stop as HH travels from a local retreat
[Menla] to KTD Monastery atop overlook mountain, for a teaching on the
following day .... will offer an opportunity for local activists to
hear one who practices non-violence offer guidance amidst current events
that suggest that violence is a viable solution to many of the problems
that our world confronts .... one can only hope that the words spoken here
will somehow find a way to the ears of the leaders who desperately
need to hear them
9/06 WEM/blog an anticipated
turn of events on Thursday led United for Peace and Justice, the nation's
largest antiwar coalition, to learn it would be given a permit for a
peaceful antiwar protest march in New York City to coincide with President
Bush’s visit to the United Nations. UFPJ characterizes it as a stunning
turn of events, as the NYC Police Department reversed its previous
decision to deny
UFPJ
the right to march on Sept. 19th within proximity of the U.N.
9/06 the
New York City Police Department has refused to
grant a permit to United for Peace & Justice to march anywhere near

during a meeting to discuss the details of a protest
against President Bush when he addresses the
U.N. General Assembly on
Sept. 19th, the NYC Police Department stunned the representatives of
United for Peace & Justice when they said there would be NO marches
allowed anywhere near the UN that day. NYPD
Says No to Plans for Antiwar March When Bush Speaks at U.N. On
August 29th UFPJ hand-delivered a permit request to march on a route that
would go from Herald Square at 6th Ave. and 34th Street to the Dag
Hammarskjold Plaza, a park across the street from the U.N. Instead of
working out details, the police announced that "security
concerns" related to the president and other heads of state being in
New York City would be their primary responsibility on Sept. 19th, and
therefore they would not be allowing any marches in the general vicinity
of the U.N. One
suggested response to the police decision is to organize
a non-violent civil disobedience action, by marching without a permit,
possibly from a legally permitted rally site
to the U.N. United
for Peace & Justice plans to announce response at a press conference
on Thursday.

it's all
about territory & control, power without regard for human life, merely
the cost of reaching distant goals meant to serve a population while not
serving that population at all .. war is obscene, killing children is
never acceptable, engaging terror with force begets conflict so mired in
confusion, that the unraveling itself hinders the objective .. peace
movements whose voices are never heard .. UN inaction, a pathway set forth
in sub Saharan Africa .. conflict based on history distorted by time, and
the retelling of tales of false truths .. wandering the sands of the
middle east, one can find the bullets & blood of so many innocents ..
militias are told they must disarm, while those shouting those commands back
home point to a constitution which guarantees the right to bear arms
& self protection, hypocrites all, while flipping burgers at barbecues
& mowing the grass with little regard for the energy used for these
simple tasks, why are we not realizing that people are suffering & dying
for this, our way of life, America wake up, we cannot continue to live
for the sake of a war machine motivated by greed, so the few may profit in
unholy ways .. which in the end allows the death of children to be just

must we all become good consumers for the profit of the profiteers
Due to a United States plan to
realign its military bases in Asia, the Daechuri villagers,
along with other farming communities near Pyeongtaek, in South Korea, are being
forcibly evicted from their land. After a long
struggle against the Korean government's attempts to
take their homes, the villagers declared Daechuri autonomous &
renounced their Korean citizenship in early February. Foreign
bases in Pyeongtaek first arrived during the Sino-Japan War. From War
broke out between the two countries, and Japan emerged in a great victory. One
can only imagine how hard both sides fought. Even today, through oral history,
people describe the fighting as if the “city of Asan & Pyeongtaek were
ready collapse.” From
1904-05, Japan waged a war with Russia in the (Russo-Japanese War). Again,
however, this war was fought not on Japanese or Russian soil, but in Korea. Pyeongtaek again
became an outpost for foreign military bases.
US in
South Korea As
soon as Korea became liberated, the Japanese base in Anjungri was taken over by
the US military. As US
military units began expanding, nearby residents were employed as “house
boys” by the US military or in construction projects. Children aged 15-16 were
also ordered by US servicemen to clean or run errands. Because
the US military used bulldozers to construct bases, in a short span of time,
hills and farm fields were converted into military facilities. The
US obviously expanded bases during the Korean War. But even after the war, the
bases continued to expand. Now even as the US troop deployment is being reduced
the farmers of South Korea continue to pay a price for US presence in the
conflict with DPRK. On the peninsular one thing is for certain, money &
power continue to hold the reins of control over peoples lives & lands.

Pipeline Protests have taken place in Ire land,
England, Scotland & Sweden to publicise the campaign ahead of the
re-opening of Rossport
Solidarity Camp, a protest camp supporting a community based struggle
against Shell in the West of Ireland. On Friday 17th there was a
demonstration in Liverpool, a critical mass style bike ride and occupation
of Shell garages in Nottingham
and in north London. In Rossport Irish residents & supporters continue
to obstruct the building of a dangerous gas pipeline. Last year five men
from Rossport were jailed for contempt of court for refusing to obey the
High Court order not to interfere with the construction of the Corrib gas
pipeline. They were expected to be back at the High Court, potentially
facing more time in jail.
